Description

As we dive deeper into our LETRS training and knowledge, we continue to realize the importance of putting decodable texts and passages in the hands of our Firsties.  Decodable texts help our students strengthen and develop their word recognition.  They give our students the opportunity to build basic foundational reading skills by focusing on phonics and decoding strategies.  The texts are controlled for a specific phonics pattern while reviewing previously learned patterns.  In short, decodable texts give our students practice with the spelling pattern they are working to master.  We try to put a book or passage in the hands of our students daily.  As you can imagine, we are always looking for ways to enrich this practice and excite our students.  The Hello Literacy decodables would be a great addition to what we are using.  We love that they have fiction and nonfiction titles.  Our Firsties would certainly benefit from having these in our classroom for small group, independent, and home reading.

About the nonfiction super pack:

All books are 16 pages including front & back cover with title, skill and book introduction. The inside front cover gives an overview of the new skill, the heart words + Tier 3 topic words with heart parts, vocabulary words, decodable words, number of running words in the book and book concept/topic with a short script related to the phonics skill for the teacher or tutor to read to the child.

Each book includes a title page, 8 pages of nonfiction text, a Glossary page, an I Can Read Sentences page, an I Can Talk About the Book page with questions and answers for developing comprehension through oral language. The inside back cover contains the publication information as well as the book's ISBN#. Use these books in your Science of Reading Classroom after systematic, explicit phonics instruction and ideal for skill based phonics groups in K-2 or 3-5.

A nonfiction decodable book has two purposes: to give students numerous opportunities to practice reading words in context with the new phonics skill, and to learn through information.

Benefits of Program

All of our Firsties would benefit from this grant.  The scope and sequence of the decodables aligns with LETRS and how we should introduce the various sound spellings.  Our students will also enjoy the mixture of nonfiction and fiction titles.  The nonfiction titles are full of great photographs as well giving our students opportunities to build their schema around a variety of topics.  Utilizing both types of books also allows us to reach the varied interests of our students.

Success of Program

These books would enhance our classroom and curriculum by giving our students more choice.  We all know kids love to have choice and ownership.  It will be nice to have more engaging topics and titles for our Firsties to read while still following the best practices we know as LETRS trained educators.  While utilizing these decodables, students will be given ample opportunities to practice the spelling pattern they are working on mastering.  In turn, we hope to see our reading flourish and first grade students excited to pick up a book they can read!

Implementation

We would love to have these texts for the start of the 2024-2025 school year.  We would begin using the decodables at the beginning of school year once we have finished assessing our students.  When we know the starting point for everyone, we will jump right in to work on whatever phonics skill each student needs.  We will use these during our small group instruction, independent reading practice, and for take home practice as well.
