Description

Scholastic News and National Geographic kids are longstanding resources used in a variety of academic settings.  I would be utilizing these resources in order to provide grade level appropriate reading for my students.  Scholastic News allows me the flexibility of ordering resources at both 2nd and 3rd grade levels in order to support the wide range of readers in my classroom.  When teaching a combination class with multiple grade levels it can be challenging to scaffold reading opportunities to reach all readers and this will allow me some of that flexibility.

Benefits of Program

This particular grant will support the 25 2nd and 3rd grade students in my classroom next year. It will be beneficial to all students and will provide them with exposure to more non-fiction reading material in the classroom.  I believe that providing a wide range of reading materials, from different genres, really supports students in literacy and helps them grow as readers.

Success of Program

I would consider this grant a success if students are enjoying reading and growing as readers through the material throughout the year.  This grant would allow students to feel confident in their reading abilities by providing them with reading material that is at an appropriate reading level and includes topics that they find interesting and relevant.  Students will have the ability to use these materials during small group reading time as well as during independent literacy work.  While this wouldn't be our primary reading curriculum, it would be a wonderful supplement to our literacy program, providing more non-fiction material for students when much of their reading time is focused on fictional reading.

Implementation

This grant would be implemented during the 2024-2025 school year.  It will be utilized during small group literacy lessons as well as during independent reading centers.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

As these are considered consumables, they wouldn't be easily shared with other members of the team.

Sustainability
Since Scholastic News and National Geographic for Kids magazines are considered consumables, this would not be fully sustainable. If additional funding is needed in coming years, I would complete a new grant for that cycle.
