Canciones y Cuentos Decodable Books Level A contain stories in Spanish that delight students and invite them to learn the basics of reading through phonics. This set includes 6 copies each of 26 decodable books (156 books total) per set. The 6 year eBook license gives students fully integrated online, downloadable, and mobile access to all 26 decodable books. Students can view on mobile devices, access audio, search for keywords and phrases, highlight texts, and make notes. These books will be replacing the set that was purchased in the late 90’s. They are an incredible resource that we hope will enhance and enrich our student daily literacy life within the classroom. The texts being requested address our social studies, science, math content as well as social development.
At the heart of the Canciones y Cuentos literacy program, are the songs and stories. The meaningful, engaging decodable texts present content- area topics or culturally significant stories in a highly graphic format that support meaning. Each text is also linked to the language songs of the program. Through the Canciones y Cuentos Level A texts, children will have an opportunity to engage in repeated readings of materials at their instructional level to decode words in context, develop fluency, and build comprehension. In addition, these texts will provide students access to high frequency word instruction and practice. These decodable readers will be used in class on a daily basis to enrich students’ daily literacy life within the classroom. The benefit of having access to decodable readers that tie into our daily language songs has a great impact on the developing bilingual brain. Young students learn through songs, patterns and meaningful topics. Our site has already purchased the updated Cancionero teacher manual, CD's, Big Book of Songs, Activity Book for each individual child and a Mini Activity Book for each individual child. The educational benefit to receiving funding for these books is vast in that students will have access to quality reading material.
Achievement and success will be measured through continuous growth in individual reading levels as determined by TTUSD’s literacy assessment program Fountas & Pinnell. Moreover, daily informal/formal observations will measure success as students build a love for reading.
The implementation of this program would be through Daily, the literacy structure for TTUSD. First, each student will read in a small group setting with their classroom teacher during Daily 5; Read with Someone. This will provide students with their first exposure to the text. Second, each student will take the texts to their classroom book boxes to read during Daily 5; Read to Self. Third, through the eBook version of the text, students will have the opportunity to interact with the text to address Daily 5’s; Word Work and/or Daily 5’s; Listen to Reading through the audio capability. Finally, all K students will be assessed continuously using our district adopted assessment Fountas and Pinnell to monitor and improve foundational reading skills.
As a kindergarten team, we work together to meet the diverse needs of our students. We have differentiated grouping to provide intervention as well as extensions to our students. However, due to the immense impact and support these readers will provide our students we are requesting a classroom set per teacher.

Canciones y Cuentos is a K-2 program; as such it is not eligible for piloting at TTUSD. Although we will adopt a curriculum as a school site in the 2018 school cycle, it will have to be supplemented in regards to text. Daily 5 outlines that each child should have access to 7-8 books at his or her level. This program is acclaimed in TWI and the quality of Spanish and authentic text is what our young readers deserve.
We are a Dual Spanish- English Immersion program. Kindergarten is the pillar of literacy development. Our team is committed to developing young readers who LOVE to open a book for pleasure. As an immersion program it is often very difficult to find quality authentic readers for our youngest readers. Canciones y Cuentos provides us with rich language opportunities through songs and texts that enhance their life's.
