The objective of the Core Connections Course 3 is to prepare students for Algebra, and the rigor of the Common Core State Standards before testing begins in 2015. The course uses a problem-based approach and is structured around problems and investigations that build conceptual understanding. Lessons are structured for students to collaborate, generalize and communicate their thinking. These practices are advocated by the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP).
Student success will be measured by teacher-made assessments, progress on grade-level assessments, and State testing, if given. Success will also be measured by how students are able to progress into Algebra the following year.
The program will be implemented as a supplement to the current Board-adopted Algebra Readiness textbook. Chapters are divided into sections that are organized around core topics. Within each section, lessons include activities, challenging problems, investigations and practice problems. Students will have a textbook available in the classroom as well as an eBook license so that the textbook will be available on their school-issued Chromebook.
Our 8th grade math PLC is piloting the Core Connections Course 3 this year. We agree that this approach aligns with the CCSS and would be a valuable asset to our math program. The program is rigorous and the students are more engaged with the activities provided.
