Description

These units of "Exploring our World", and "Mapping it" is an integrated science, literacy, math and social Studies unit designed for 1st-grade students to explore Earth’s diverse biomes and basic cartography. Students will use high-quality non-fiction mentor texts to research specific habitats (rainforests, deserts, tundras, etc.) and then apply their learning by constructing 3D biome dioramas. The project also includes map-making materials to help students understand where these biomes are located globally, bridging the gap between abstract geography and tangible science. Following the creation of their biome in which they will include a specific animal habitat, they will then create a 3-D map of a city they have created. They will be tasked to create a brochure to go with this city and to sell it to the mayor (the teacher) of this new town they have created. 

Benefits of Program

The units will offer an exhaustive, multi-dimensional learning experience. By pivoting away from siloed subjects, these units integrate Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and History-Social Science frameworks into a cohesive, project-based curriculum.

I. Integrated Literacy and Research Systems

This will transcends basic reading fluency by immersing students in technical and informational texts.

  • Evidence-Based Inquiry (RI.1.10 & W.1.2): Students engage with complex non-fiction mentor texts to conduct primary research. This process culminates in the production of informative writing, such as city brochures, where students must synthesize facts and provide structured academic closure.
  • Economic Literacy (HSS-1.6.1): Literacy is applied through real-world simulations, such as "selling" architectural concepts to community figures (the Mayor/Teacher), effectively bridging the gap between communication and the fundamental concepts of exchange and commerce.

II. Scientific Modeling and Environmental Analysis

We prioritize the Science and Engineering Practices (SEP-2) by moving beyond theoretical discussion into physical representation.

  • Biomimicry and Adaptation (1-LS1-1 & 1-ESS2-1): Students analyze how biological organisms utilize specific traits for survival. They identify climate and vegetation patterns across global biomes, using these observations to design innovative solutions to human challenges.
  • Habitat Diversity (NGSS Alignment): The curriculum provides a rigorous framework for understanding Earth’s systems, specifically focusing on how location, weather, and physical environments dictate the survival strategies of both humans and animals (HSS-1.2.4).

III. Spatial Reasoning and Geometric Composition

Mathematics and Geography are integrated through high-level tactile construction.

  • Three-Dimensional Synthesis (1.G.A.1 & 1.G.A.2): Students distinguish between defining and non-defining attributes of shapes to engineer composite 3D structures. By utilizing cubes, prisms, and cones to build a "3D City," students master geometric properties in a functional context.
  • Cartographic Literacy (HSS-1.2.2 & HSS-1.2.3): Learners compare the data-rich nature of 3D models against 2D representations. They construct original maps using cardinal directions and symbolic notation, reinforcing spatial awareness and navigational logic.

Core Pillars of Success at Truckee Elementary

  • Advanced Literacy Acquisition: We provide curated, high-interest non-fiction resources that broaden academic vocabulary and deepen reading comprehension through purposeful research.
  • Tactile Mastery: Through the construction of biomes and dioramas, tactile learners demonstrate mastery of complex environmental concepts—such as animal adaptations and vegetation cycles—in a way that traditional testing cannot capture.
  • Synthesis and Critical Thinking: Students are challenged to make executive decisions, determining which physical materials (textures, colors, and layouts) most accurately represent scientific data, thereby fostering a high level of cognitive engagement.
Success of Program

The success of this grant will be measured through:

  • Formative Assessment: Teacher observation during the research phase using the mentor texts to ensure students can identify key characteristics of their chosen biome.
  • Summative Project: Completion of the 3D diorama and the 3D city map, evaluated against a rubric for accuracy (inclusion of specific animal habitats and map keys).
  • Oral Presentation: The "Brochure Presentation" to the Mayor will measure the students’ ability to synthesize their learning and speak clearly about their creative and scientific choices.
Implementation

 The project will be rolled out over a 6-8 week period:

  1. Weeks 1-2 (Research): Students use the requested non-fiction mentor texts to research biomes in small groups.
  2. Weeks 3-4 (Creation): Students use art supplies and dioramas to build their specific biome and animal habitat.
  3. Week 5 (Mapping): Transitioning to cartography, students will build their 3D city maps, learning about scale and symbols.
  4. Week 6 (The Pitch): Students design their brochures and present their "New Town" to the class and the teacher (The Mayor).
  5. The culmination: Students will wrap up their learning of Biomes, animal adaptation and mapping prior to Open House where their work will be showcased for parents and families. ​​
Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes! This project is designed to be highly collaborative. The mentor texts and durable mapping tools can be shared across the 1st-grade team at Truckee Elementary. Furthermore, the lesson plans and rubrics created for this unit can be shared digitally with other schools in the district to ensure a unified approach to the 1st-grade integrated curriculum.

Sustainability
The primary impact of this grant is sustained through the purchase of high-quality non-fiction Mentor Text and durable mapping materials and biome materials that will remain in the classroom library for years to come. The only recurring costs in future years would be basic consumable art supplies (glue, cardboard, clay), which can be covered by standard classroom budgets. The core instructional framework and resource library will serve 1st-grade students for the foreseeable future. This initial grant will help us to start building on our consumable supplies as well.

Other funding sources

We are currently utilizing our classroom's basic supply budget for consumable items like markers and glue. However, that budget is insufficient to cover the specialized 3D building materials and the high-quality non-fiction library necessary to make this an authentic research project. We have not applied for other outside funding at this time.

Notes

The cost for items was delivering an error message and would not accept the exact amounts so I rounded up to the nearest dollar. The aquarium portion is going to provide a real life example of a habitat. Also, since the order is from amazon business, it is my understanding that there is no charge for shipping.
