Gaga Ball is a fast paced, fun game that can be played with multiple ages and players of all abilities. Up to 15-20 students can run, jump, and dodge in the game as a single ball is moved around the pit. This portable pit (20' diameter) allows for an extra space for movement indoors and outdoors.
Students in grades TK-5th grades will benefit from the grant, which equates to the entire school! When playing the game, students may interact with students from different classes while getting a surprising amount of exercise.
The addition of a portable Gaga Ball pit would enhance recess and P.E. options both indoors and out during all seasons. During inclement weather in the winter the Gaga Ball pit could be moved to an indoor space for active play of up to 20 kids. A bonus is that the came encourages multi-age play and the portable model would promote student accountability with set-up and take down.
The Gaga Ball pit would be primarily used outside. However, during the months when the blacktop needs to be clear at all times for snow removal, it could be stored and accessed easily for use in the gym. I plan to introduce this game in my P.E. classes for a 2-3 week unit and then it could be used as an everyday recess activity.
This grant would benefit the entire school with students in grades TK-5th being able to play. Students would be able to play in grade level scenarios during designated P.E. stations, as well as with multiple grade levels at recess.
I know that Excellence in Ed. doesn't usually fund playground equipment but this grant will be used in Physical Education class and will reach all students in our school. Donner Trail was awarded this same grant for their site a few years back.
