This program aims to have students explore intriguing science concepts (such as Force & Motion, The Solar System, Air, The Water Cycle & Weather and Sunshing & Shadow) via performance theatre. Students then develop the ability to ask questions, investigate aspects of the world around them and use their observations to construct reasonable explanations when answering questions.
Milestone activities of work created and performed by students during each week of the Residency. Pre, mid, and post-residency evaluations to ensure the residency goals set up by faculty and Science Theatre Staff are met.
This 9-Week Residency would include instruction for 3 classrooms (all third grades at Tahoe Lake Elementary) meeting once/week for 45-50 minutes per class. It also includes planning meetings between the Classroom Art Educator and faculty to establish residency goals and a curriculum outline including what key science concepts and standards will be met.
This grant for Get in the Act Science Theatre would involve an entire third grade community of students working together to learn science concepts via live performances. This program perfectly meshes with our new Science Focus that we have recently adopted at Tahoe Lake Elementary. In addition to mastering science concepts, the live public speaking opportunities this Residency offers may help many of our students with their language arts skills. This Science Theater Residency will fully complement the 3rd grade PLCs overarching essential theme: Under the Stars in the Tahoe Watershed and is aligned to state standards. Through site developed common assessments, 3rd grade students’ mastery of the science standards are regularly assessed and these results are used to guide instruction. Grade level strengths and weaknesses can be shared with Diane Handzel and the Get in the Act staff so that focused academic growth will occur during the residency as students grow their understanding of science through performance and exploration.
