Description

Graphic Novels are a wonderful way to introduce chapter books and more complex literacy skills to young readers. Graphic Novels use engaging illustrations to motivate the reader while providing support for vocabulary and comprehension. These titles are also super popular and the first ones to be borrowed off the shelf. The Reading Intervention Program at KBE needs more of these titles, in both Spanish and English, in the literacy room to further engage these budding readers.

Benefits of Program

This program benefits hundreds of students that visit the literacy room each year. By providing engaging, good fit "hook books," students are motivated to read these series of graphic novels. Ideally, they finish one book and then are ready to read the whole set!

Success of Program

By motivating students to read graphic novels, they feel successful and more engaged in the classroom. Graphic novels help children acquire background knowledge, vocabulary, and reading comprehension at the reading level that fits their needs. These books will help students be successful because they will want to read one after the other!

Implementation

I will purchase these titles with the money given. Then I will label them as KBE RTI, so they will remain in either Room 16 or M-7 (where other RTI classes take place). Students can read these titles and keep them in their book boxes. Students have time to read these graphic novels when I am doing progress monitoring or when I am reading individually with students. Thus, the books are always available for student use.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes, these graphic novels will be shared with the RTI Team - Alicia, Yesenia and myself. They will be available for Kindergarten-5th grade, depending on their reading levels.

Sustainability
These books will last for many years to come! Whenever possible, I have tried to buy the hardcover. However, we always repair and reuse any books that are damaged.

Other funding sources

Books are expensive! We only have so much money from classroom supplies and we need to use that for everyday items. These books are not part of curriculum so they are not funded by the district.
