The Home Study grant will provide an activity and description of the activity for each essential math standard. It will promote Spanish language acquisition for English-speakers and will strengthen the primary language vocabulary of Spanish-speakers. Parents will be more connected and aware of the rigor of each essential standard. Students will practice their math skills at home and increase their understanding of the standards. The learning will not stop at school; it will continue at home!

Description
Success of Program
All kindergarten teachers in the district test students on math essential standards with an assessment called the DSA. At KBE we will track student progress and the skills they gain through this DSA. We will see their gains and also where they still need improvement. Those that still need improvement in certain essential standards will be given the home activity to practice those specific skills. We will also see through observations and common assessments if students are getting a deeper understanding of the standards.
Implementation
- Purchase materials
- Sort out materials by standards
- Collect reusable plastic bins, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, strawberry baskets to organize and store the materials
- Write activity directions for parents in Spanish and English
- Create a check out/organization system
- Make lists of students that need to practice certain standards
- Inform parents and begin checking out activities
- Keep track of which students have checked out activities/ which ones need to
- Keep parents accountable for the materials in each activity
- Assess students with the DSA each trimester to see gains
- Check in with all K teachers to see how the program is working
Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?
- Our kindergarten smart goal is for our students to know 80% of their standards, so we are able to track that progress and use this grant as another tool for student success
- We are able to work as a PLC and track student gains and areas of improvement.
- We will collaborate to make the Home Study program work positively for our students by discussing:
- how the check-out to parents is going
- if students are actually using the activities
- if we are seeing gains from DSAs and our common assessments
- how we can make it run smoother
