Description

We would like to hold a series of parent/family meetings for Kindergarten families to inform parents about habits at home that promote healthy brains and academic success. The series would be a series of meetings held by a team of our staff including the ELD Coordinator & Community Liaison, School Principal, and Kindergarten Teacher. The meetings would be in English and Spanish in order to be inclusive of all community members.

The topics would include:

  • Technology/screen time
  • Nutrition, exercise and sleep
  • Reading aloud at home
  • Math at home
  • Supporting early literacy skills
  • Engaging and connecting with your child
  • SIERRA norms (character building)

At each meeting we would present information, have parents practice the behaviors with their children, and distribute supplies to help them be successful in implementing these practices at home.

Benefits of Program

The grant will enable families and students to have the knowledge and materials necessary to implement practices at home that promote student success. We believe that early development and implementation of healthy habits at home can support students academically. Additionally, research shows that healthy habits such as sufficient sleep, eating nutritious food, limiting screen time, exercising, and engaging with others in meaningful ways improves brain health and academic success.

Success of Program

We are anticipating that the meeting series and provided supplies results in more parent engagement and healthy habits for students at home. If these practices are implemented by parents at home, it should result in academic success for students. We plan to measure success by comparing academic scores to previous years and conducting parent and student surveys to determine usefulness and effectiveness of the Kindergarten Family Series.

Implementation

The SELS ELD Coordinator will purchase and prepare the supplies for each meeting. The SELS Kindergarten teacher, ELD Coordinator and Principal will meet together to develop meeting content and they will all be leaders hosting monthly family meetings. Each meeting will give an overview of practices that parents can do at home with their children to help them succeed in school.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

SELS only has one Kindergarten class. We are anticipating that the program will have a lasting impact and that families will continue these practices which will benefit the students as they move through their academic careers.

Sustainability
The funding we are requesting is for the supplies that will be distributed to families to use at home, so they would need to be replenished annually if it is determined that the program is successful and should be continued.
