Description

Last year, I requested 40 copies of the Oral History compilation, Surviving Justice: America's Wrongfully Convicted and Exonerated as a supplemental text to use in my Law 1 CTE course. These novels have been received incredibly well by students and have directly improved the course. Unfortunately, due to schedule changes there were eight novels that never returned. In an effort to maintain a class set to support the 32 students each semester, I would like to request some additional novels to replace those that did not return.

Benefits of Program

The Surviving Justice novels allow students to read both in and outside of class and then participate with Book Club conversations and complete individual chapter analysis to deepen their understanding of the justice system and when it fails.

Success of Program

The pilot of these texts in the 2025-26 school year has been incredible. The students really enjoy the text, the conversations around the text are rich and complex. The first semester was a learning opportunity and through student feedback, I revised the text usage for the second semester and students are engaging even more than before.

Implementation

This text is currently being implemented and this grant request is just asking so some replacement texts to ensure the implementation can continue moving forward.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

This grant will be used only in the Law 1 CTE course as I am the only teacher on site who offers the course and currently holds the credential necessary to teach it. If there are extra novels available, they can be used by individual students on a check out basis.

Sustainability
After revising the check out policies from the first semester we have learned the best way to ensure the novels return and are accounted for is to check them out in the second week of class, when student schedules are locked. Students also have the choice to keep the book in class and read only in class which has also resolved the issues of misplacement. These two modifications are ensuring the consumables are returning for the next group of students.
