This grant would provide funding for integrated learning in which students design and create moon phase prints, using the correct amount of illumination and shadow for each moon phase. Through a combination of art and science, this hands-on project would extend fifth grade learning of Earth and space patterns to foster a deeper understanding of the lunar cycle.
Students will create accurate moon phase prints which will require understanding of astronomy and art techniques. Incorporating quality art lessons into standards-based learning can promote equity in education by creating opportunities for students of diverse learning abilities and styles to access grade level concepts through multimodal and kinesthetic learning.
Students will demonstrate understanding of how the interactions between the Sun and Moon are responsible for the Moon's phases.
Fifth grade students at KBE will complete this project in the classroom. Final artwork will then be displayed in the hallway at school.
This project will reach all fifth grade students at KBE among two different classes.
