Description

This grant request seeks funding to purchase snowshoes for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 5th-grade students at Glenshire Elementary School, enabling weekly winter Science Enrichment activities. This initiative directly supports the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District's (TTUSD) Outdoor Education/Environmental Literacy strategic plan, fostering a deeper connection with nature and promoting environmental stewardship.

Benefits of Program

During the winter months, students will engage in hands-on, experiential learning through snowshoeing. These activities will focus on:

  • Developing Snowshoeing Skills: Students will learn the proper techniques for snowshoeing, ensuring safe and effective exploration of the winter environment.
  • Leave No Trace Principles: Integrating the seven Leave No Trace principles, students will understand and practice responsible outdoor recreation, minimizing their impact on the fragile winter ecosystem.
  • Winter Survival Skills: Snowshoes will be essential for implementing the "Hug A Tree" curriculum, teaching students critical winter survival skills, including navigation, shelter building, and signaling.
  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Alignment: Snowshoeing activities will provide a real-world context for learning key Environmental Principles and Climate Change Concepts outlined in the NGSS. Students will observe and analyze winter ecosystems, explore the effects of snowpack on the environment, and understand the importance of climate change adaptation.
  • Enhanced Outdoor Education: By providing access to snowshoes, we will expand our capacity to deliver engaging and meaningful outdoor education experiences, fostering a lifelong appreciation for nature.

    • Creating positive memories of outdoor winter activities.

Success Indicators:

  • Positive feedback from students, teachers, and parents.
  • Increased student interest in science and outdoor education.
  • Demonstrated student understanding of environmental concepts.
  • The program's ability to be sustained and replicated in future years.
Implementation

This grant represents a strategic investment in our students' education and well-being.  Beyond immediate implementation upon funding this grant, this initiative is designed for enduring impact. The purchased snowshoes will become a foundational resource for our school's Outdoor Education/Environmental Literacy program, serving generations of students. This is not a short-term project, but rather a long-term commitment to providing consistent, high-quality outdoor learning opportunities for all students at Glenshire Elementary School.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Adult sized snowshoes will also be purchased with this grant so that teachers can take their classes with other staff or parents.

Teacher Training and Development: Ongoing professional development for our educators will ensure they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively lead snowshoeing activities and maximize student learning.

Sustainability
The longevity of this program will be secured through:

Durable Equipment: We will prioritize the purchase of high-quality, durable snowshoes designed to withstand the rigors of regular use in our challenging winter environment, ensuring a long lifespan.

Curriculum Integration: Snowshoeing activities are seamlessly integrated into our existing Science Enrichment curriculum, guaranteeing their continued relevance and implementation.

Community Engagement: We will foster community partnerships to support and enhance our outdoor education program, ensuring its sustainability and growth.

Maintenance and Storage Plan: A clear plan will be created and implemented to ensure that the snowshoes are properly maintained, stored, and available for use year after year.

By securing this grant, you are not simply funding a one-time activity; you are investing in a sustainable program that will enrich the lives of our students for years to come. This enduring resource will empower our school to cultivate environmentally responsible citizens, foster a love for the outdoors, and provide invaluable hands-on learning experiences that extend far beyond the classroom walls.
