The purpose of this grant is to purchase materials to support adding a STEM related ACES rotation for the 6th grade team. Specifically, this grant seeks to purchase STEAM Classroom Robotics - Strawbees and Micro:Bit for students use in 6th grade ACES classrooms.
Teachers at Alder Creek Middle School are passionate about teaching science and supporting students experiencing what they are learning. Students’ interest and mastery of concepts and skills is enhanced through hands-on learning experiences. The tools purchased through this grant would directly benefit students by allowing them hands-on opportunities to build with Strawbees and use the micro:bit pocket-sized computer to learn entry level coding. The combination of these two tools will allow students to bring life to their creations.
The success of the program will be measured by the students ability to demonstrate building and coding skills. Students will be able to build their own creations and add life to them through the computerized Micro:bit tools.
These materials will be used in one of 6th grade ACES classrooms. Students will use them to learn about basic mechanical inventions beginning with a level 1 and moving through level 3 and finally level 4 with the integration of mechanical pieces using the Micro:bit and their coding knowledge. This will help them demonstrate a deeper level of understanding of both inventions and coding.
These materials were chosen to target the application of STEM in the 6th grade classroom. If another teacher would want to use them to support their standards or science lesson, I would be happy to share.
I will have access to a yearly budget for ACES if I need to replace any parts to this kit.
