Description

We are in need of ten pairs of student-sized waders.  We need these waders to replace aged and cracking waders that were purchased over ten years ago.

Benefits of Program

All students will benefit from these waders. As part of our educational connection to our environment, we host an annual "River Day" as well as utilize the Yuba River for a variety of studies and lessons. Student waders have really taken a toll the last few years and are in need of replacement. Students wear these waters to collect and study micro and macroinvertebrates, collect data on water speed and quality, and measure algae growth year to year.  We need students to be able to safely enter the water in appropriate gear in order from them to be active members of their learning. Students often work in multi-age groups when working near the river.

Success of Program

Having had waders in the past, we know that it has a direct positive effect on student learning and ability to participate in science and math activities that take place in our watershed.  Students are able to work with parent volunteers, including Headwaters Institute, in order to collect data and information to bring back to the classroom. We apply this information and differentiate based on the classroom and students' needs.

Implementation

The grant will be implemented with the purchase waders so that we can work in the river in groups of roughly ten. We will use these in many science activities as well as in our community River Day festival that occurs each fall at our school.  This day is 100% science, community, and multiage based curriculum that directly connects to the Yuba River.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

All grade levels will utilize these and we will purchase a variety of sizes so students in each age group can use these

Sustainability
We haven't had to purchase waders in over a decade. We will care for them after each use and be sure students have instruction on care and maintenance. Moving forward, we would like to work with our science site funds and PTO to purchase one pair a year to keep the replacement cost reasonable. Because replacements haven't been occurring, they are all in disrepair but moving forward we won't have the same issue again.

Other funding sources

The cost of waders is high. We have reached out to Orvis, SIMMS and a variety of other manufacturers for donations or to work with a grant like programs. However, we are not having any luck.  We are finding Excellence in Ed to be our best option. Moving forward we would replace one at a time, yearly, so that our PTO can help us take on this cost moving forward.
