Description

Truckee Elementary is fortunate to be using a Walk-to-Learn model to support our literacy instruction. This means that beyond receiving a whole class lesson, each student gets personalized literacy instruction in a small group. Our challenge with this approach is having the supplemental materials we need to support every child. As such, the 1st and 2nd grade teachers (currently 8 classes) are in need of 50 sets of Decodable Books that are used for small group instruction.

Benefits of Program

The SuperCharged Readers support the teachers in delivering personalized instruction for every child. Each set includes 37 books that each covers a different phonics skill. The books contain a complete multi-day process for learning the phonics skills in a variety of ways. This way the students are able to identify, decode, and practice writing each book's skill. The books also include pre and post reading components to build high-frequency word recognition and develop comprehension skills.

Success of Program

The success of the program will be based upon our school reading screener (DIBELS). The teachers use the DIBELS assessment to track the students progress on a regular basis. The assessment also allows the teachers to see how much growth the students are making in multiple areas. The teachers will monitor the students growth, and will expect to see average or above average growth in their target areas. Some target areas will include Nonsense Word Reading Fluency (phonics decoding), Word Reading Fluency (high-frequency word recognition), and Oral Reading Fluency (both accuracy and words per minute speed).

Implementation

The SuperCharged Readers will be used during the Walk to Learn portion of our daily literacy blocks. The 1st grade teachers will use them to support students who are reading at or above grade level. The Second grade teachers will use them to support students who are below grade level.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes, this grant is intended to be shared among the first and second grade teams. The readers will help support 50 students in first and second grade. The readers will be used by the teachers when we are mixing our classes to help support students by their reading levels.

Sustainability
This is a product that will require funding each year. These readers were purchased by Title 1 funds and will hopefully be covered by that funding next year.
