Description

I have been a first-grade teacher at KBE for the past three years, and our team follows a carefully structured series of thematic units designed around grade-level standards, including social-emotional learning, social studies, and science. These units are intentionally aligned across all first-grade classrooms and taught simultaneously, covering a diverse range of topics such as community, seasons, plants, animals, outer space, growth mindset, kindness, and historical figures.

A key component of these units is access to high-quality read-alouds, which enrich vocabulary, model comprehension strategies, and support writing development. These books also provide valuable opportunities for author and illustrator studies, further deepening students' engagement with literature in meaningful ways.

However, access to these essential texts has been a persistent challenge and is the driving force behind this grant request. In previous years, we have often had to share books between classrooms or search public libraries for additional copies. Too often, we have found ourselves relying on a single copy or even using a youtube video, disrupting the proper scope and sequence of our units and causing misalignment in instruction.

With this grant, we aim to build well-rounded classroom libraries in every first-grade classroom, stocked with high-quality read-alouds in both English and Spanish. By doing so, we will ensure that all students have consistent access to the books they need to fully engage with our thematic units, fostering deeper learning and a lifelong love of reading.

Benefits of Program

These books will help us align our lessons and content instruction across first grade. As part of our recent training in the science of reading through LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), we plan to use these books to support language comprehension, including vocabulary development, syntax and sentence structure, background knowledge, and reading comprehension strategies. Students will engage in academic conversations and interact with these texts to deepen their understanding. Additionally, these books have been made available in digital libraries, allowing students to access them at home for extended learning.

Success of Program

We will collaborate closely on these lessons during our PLCs, consistently reflecting on how to refine and adapt our approach for the upcoming unit through our Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles focused on literacy and academic discourse. By planning collaboratively and utilizing standardized materials, our team will drive continuous improvement in our Science and Social Studies instruction. This collective effort will ensure that students not only gain a deeper understanding of the content but also achieve measurable success in both the application of knowledge and the development of critical thinking skills. Success will be further monitored through ongoing assessments of student comprehension and mastery of the units.

Implementation

We will begin incorporating these books immediately into our curriculum. Our classroom libraries are strategically organized by unit themes, ensuring that relevant resources are readily accessible throughout each unit. At the start of each unit, these books will serve as a key tool for building knowledge, allowing students to engage with the material from the first introduction. Students will then have the opportunity to deepen their understanding through independent reading or collaborative reading with a peer, fostering both personal exploration and shared learning experiences. The books will also be available to students in our classroom libraries throughout the school year.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Our first-grade team worked together to carefully curate a targeted book list, which aligns with our curriculum to support the learning objectives for our students and grade-level standards. In addition to benefiting our own classrooms, we plan to share these books with other grade levels across our site.

Sustainability
These books will be available for the years to come and if books are available in hardcover, we will purchase them to ensure the most longevity. Since the books chosen support our unit themes, which are primarily based on our CA State Science and Social Studies Standards, they will be used every year with our first grade students for many years to come.
