3rd grade students at Tahoe Lake have traditionally tie dyed shirts at the end of the school year. This has become somewhat of a right of passage/tradition. The students then wear these vibrant shirts for all of our end of the year activities and field trips. We would like to continue this tradition and are requesting funding to purchase the dye and other chemicals necessary to do this project with our students. We would also like to purchase some t-shirts for those students unable to bring a shirt from home.
All students in third grade will benefit from this program. This is an Art project that benefits all students and targets Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). We have approximately 50 students in third grade this 2021/2022 school year.
This grant will enhance the students' culmination of the school year through:
- Team Building
- Exploring of the chemistry of dying with a hands on activity
- Experimenting with color blending
- Creating a wearable piece of art
- Having fun!
In the past, the success of the program has been evident through the excitement of turning a white shirt into a colorful piece of clothing. Students work together, make a design plan, and have fun. No two shirts are ever alike! Students learn about the dying process but mostly are having fun creating a wearable piece of art. This project allows all students to feel successful.
This program will be implemented in May or June. We will dye one morning at school. The students will take the coiled shirt home to sit for a night. The shirt will be rinsed and laundered at home. The student will wear their art to school the following day and for the remainder to the 3rd grade field trips and probably for years to come. (If you want to know the specific details of the chemical soaking and dying process, I can provide you with those.)
Yes, the materials purchased for this grant will be shared with the other grade level teacher to use with all of the third grade students.
