This set of vernier water quality data interface and probes will allow students to collect real world data connecting their 8th grade chemistry standards and Next Generation Science Standards to local service learning opportunities. We are currently working with Truckee River Watershed Council in order to develop a program for SELS 8th grade students to adopt the Donner Creek and Truckee River confluence for collecting water quality measurements and helping with restoration projects. Students can collect measurements such as dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH and turbidity among others and learn how to collect data using a professional graphing and analysis interface. The interface is also compatible with many other probes that could be purchased with future grants to expand the use of this versatile scientific data collection system.
The Vernier Lab Quest and probes will add a level of professionalism to our current water quality testing. Currently we are using the Lamotte chemical testing kit. The combination of these kits give students the understanding of the chemistry of water and take the data analysis and professionalism to another level. Students are exposed to real world equipment and data analysis tools in order to test hypotheses and develop understanding of human impacts and remediation on our water systems and watershed.
This program will be successful as students gain exposure to actual equipment used by water quality professionals. Additional benefits will include capability to collect long term water quality data that can contribute to authentic service learning opportunities with local organizations such as the Truckee River Watershed Council.
The program will be implemented in the 8th grade curriculum which focuses on water quality and human impact in order to provide context for understanding of chemistry. The program for data collection will happen in the fall and spring.
Yes, there are several probes that could be used with students realistically from 4th grade to 8th grade. We can also buy additional probes that would enhance the 8th grade study of physical science and design build challenges.
I have already applied and been granted funds to purchase a Lamotte Water Chemistry kit which we have already put to use this fall in studying the Truckee River and human impacts to water quality.
The purchase of the Vernier equipment would be above and beyond the capabilities of my current school resources and without this grant we would be unable to afford the equipment.
