Students will have access to weekly magazine with accurate and unbiased articles allowing students to develop their critical thinking skills and form opinions.
Articles are current, interesting and engaging for all students. They cover a range of topics like, nature, science, technology, sports and culture.
The exciting topics will help to instill a love of reading and learning for all students, including the most struggling readers
The magazine will enhance the curriculum, Article of the Week, already implemented in 6th grade. This program helps students develop critical thinking skills while they respond to articles of their choice
There is a digital platform for students on independent study or ski contracts
The hard copy will provide students with a break from their Chromebook screens
The magazine subscription includes a weekly teacher guide that provides lessons and activities.
It can be used across content areas with the diversity of the articles
The program will be successful when the students are actively reading and using the magazine weekly to enhance their learning while practicing important reading and thinking skills.
This grant will enhance the curriculum because it can be used to supplement the adopted ELA program, by providing an additional source of nonfiction text. The current topics and complex issues will also encourage listening and speaking by prompting classroom discussions and debate (socratic seminars)
The grant will be implemented at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. A 40 week, weekly subscription. Each ELA teacher will receive a class set each week ( 30 copies)
6th grade ELA teachers will implement a weekly activities and lessons that align with the ELA standards.
Yes, the magazines can be shared at grade level across content areas, as needed.
