Description

This grant is for the 5th grade team* at Kings Beach Elementary to build student friendly libraries that cater to all reading levels and to align guided reading and mentor texts across the 5th grade program. Research states that “there are strong associations between independent reading and reading achievement, and many researchers believe that independent reading plays a key role in the development of reading fluency (speed and ease of reading), vocabulary, background knowledge, and even spelling. Students' access to texts that build vocabulary and intrinsic motivation is essential for building lifelong literacy skills” (Spear-Swerling, 2005). Reading is essential for students to feel successful within academics and access grade level content. It is important to meet students at their level and actively build from there. Having access to high interest reading at their independent reading level will help build motivation and success within each student.

*5th grade is increasing by a class next year, so we are in extra need of materials.

This grant address the following standards:

CCSS.ELA.RF.5.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

CCSS.ELA-L.5.3 Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

Benefits of Program

Although independent reading is not a substitute for explicit, direct instruction from the teacher, encouraging and supporting independent reading in students helps build good habits, interest, and time to apply reading strategies that have been explicitly taught during instructional time. This grant will also help to align the guided reading and mentor texts for all three 5th grade ELA blocks. Students will benefit from being able to talk about books read during recess/lunch and connect over shared literacy experiences.

Success of Program

Libraries within the classroom provide students easy and low pressure access to engaging and approachable texts. Students are able to exhibit a sense of control by choosing a book that interests them and feeling successful which ultimately drives their reading achievement.

Implementation

Students are expected to read independently each night. This has been a major contributing factor to building reading comprehension and vocabulary. It is important that students have access to high interest reading materials at their independent reading level. This grant would allow students to have access to a variety of themes and reading levels that grow with them as they build and grow in reading during 5th grade as well as leave them with a love of reading and self confidence.
