This grant is for the 5th grade team* at Kings Beach Elementary to build student friendly libraries that cater to all reading levels and to align guided reading and mentor texts across the 5th grade program. Research states that “there are strong associations between independent reading and reading achievement, and many researchers believe that independent reading plays a key role in the development of reading fluency (speed and ease of reading), vocabulary, background knowledge, and even spelling. Students' access to texts that build vocabulary and intrinsic motivation is essential for building lifelong literacy skills” (Spear-Swerling, 2005). Reading is essential for students to feel successful within academics and access grade level content. It is important to meet students at their level and actively build from there. Having access to high interest reading at their independent reading level will help build motivation and success within each student.
*5th grade is increasing by a class next year, so we are in extra need of materials.
