The purpose of this grant is to update and revamp the second and third-grade classroom library to be more inviting to young readers and encourage them to choose fiction books that interest them, become more excited to read popular characters or deepen their knowledge of non-fiction titles that spark further curiosity. Reorganizing my current classroom library with up-to-date reading materials and improved displays with increase reading interest in young readers.
This improved classroom library display will make it easier for students to choose books based on interests, author, series, or popular characters with book covers facing out and organized by topic, series, and recommended titles. All students will benefit due to an easier system to choose books and get reading faster.
Second and Third-grade students love to read high-interest books. Reorganizing the classroom library to entice students with popular titles, characters, and series, will promote more independent reading. Instead of looking at an overwhelming collection of books, organized by author's last name, with only the binding showing, students are less likely to find a book they truly want to read. By providing easy access to books, students will be excited to read more, therefore improving their literacy skills.
With the purchase of book bins, display mounts, and new, high-interest reading material, the books in the classroom library will include featured authors of the month, social-emotional read-aloud books, student choice recommendations, and teacher faves, just to name a few. With the purchase of current high-interest books displayed in an easy-to-access format, students will be able to find their book of choice quickly and easily. Books will be rotated throughout the year to keep interest high and the excitement fresh as new books are introduced.
This is a classroom grant that will benefit the second and third-grade students in my crew. Other students visiting the crew are welcome to read the books in our library.
Our principal agrees that revamping the classroom library is a critical part of increasing interest in reading among second and third-grade students. There is no budget at this time for book bins and library displays for the classroom. Book budgets are designed for enhancing our Expeditions and are typically non-fiction, content-based reading material. I can fill in additional texts with Bear Walk monies (school-wide fundraiser) as needed.
Currently, my classroom library is organized by the author's last name with book bindings facing out. I've noticed over the years that students tend to gravitate towards books of high interest, leaving the other books collecting dust on the shelves. After doing some research on the best way to organize a primary classroom library, I have determined mine needs a make-over. Multiple sources state the best way to get kids to read in the classroom is to provide easy-to-access materials of high interest.
