For this grant, I am applying for funds to go towards purchasing Inclusive Read Aloud books for my First Grade classroom at Glenshire Elementary. Read Alouds are an effective strategy primary teachers use to teach English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards. For my classroom, I am seeking culturally diverse and inclusive read alouds that will allow students to have conversations about people, places, cultures, and inclusion. These Read Aloud books will also increase vocabulary, teach a variety of ELA standards all while incorporating SEL standards. The majority of the Read Alouds I would purchase for this grant will feature stories outside the majority demographic of the Glenshire Community.
This grant will benefit not only the students of the 2023/24 school year but many year beyond. Because the books purchased with this grant funding can be reused and repurposed for different curriculums and classes, the return on investment will go far beyond the amount spent on the initial costs. The variety of books and styles purchased will benefit kids at different levels and skills, giving me a larger selection of texts to use to fit each child's needs from year to year. Moreover, the culturally diverse and inclusive focus of the texts purchased will educate students beyond just ELA standards, allowing them to learn organically about races, identities, backgrounds, and nationalities beyond what they experience in the school and home setting.
The degree in which this project's success can be measured will not only be through ELD objectives, standard based report cards, and ELA rubrics. These books will provide many opportunities for conversations about diversity and race to create a more inclusive classroom and community.
I will use these books to teach Common Core ELA standards and SEL standards.
YES!
I use my class funds to purchase books through out the year. Since this is a bigger purchase, I would like to apply for this grant.
