We know how wonderful the Geodes program is and are thankful that a grant for 3 complete sets was awarded 3 years ago.  What we need are additional "My Geodes Take-home Books" to complete the kindergarten Geodes program.  One module was not included in the first set we got to pilot, and the other 3 sets we got due to a ExinEd grant do not come with enough books to cover classes larger than 20.  These take-home readers are an integral part of the program as they are sent home after being covered in class.  We are asking for funds to cover one complete set of Module 4 take-home readers (20) , and one entire set of 20 readers to add to the books we already have.

Benefits of Program

We love the Geodes readers!  They are highly engaging and align with our Fundations phonics program.  Students are able to practice essential reading skills while gaining a love of reading. The fact that they come with books to take home and read with families is a huge benefit.  We need enough of these readers to ensure that every student has one to take home!

Success of Program

After we cover several books in class, the "My Geodes Take-home Books" go home in their Book Bags to be reread with their families.  Anecdotal evidence tells us that families love reading these books.  They say that it helps them stay connected with what learning is happening in the classroom.  The second half of the books actually are "duet books" where the student has a part and the adult has a part adding to the shared reading experience.

Implementation

We have been using Geodes for several years now.  Systems are in place to send the "My Geodes Take-home Books" in students' book bags.  Having enough books for every student in the class is important.  This grant will allow us to fill in a module we never received and to cover classes with more than 20 students.  Having a few extras will also fill in the few books that become damaged while being used at home.  We feel the "risk" of having a book returned damaged (or not returned) is worth getting quality books into students hands.  We also can attest to the fact that very few books have fallen into this "damaged or lost" category over the 3 years we've been using them!

Sustainability
None of the books in this program are considered consumable. So, except for the occasional damaged or lost reader, the books should last a long time.
