I am requesting a grant to help replenish our music instrument inventory. Student instruments wear down over time, and end up costing a great deal to repair/replace. Ensuring that students have working instruments to play year-in and year-out is a process that repeats itself each year. Eventually, older instruments must be repaired with greater frequency and cost, until they must be retired and replaced. That certainty, coupled with the fact that our music feeder program at ACMS is thriving (around 140 students) means the Truckee HS Music program must ensure we have instruments for all the incoming students. Therefore, I am requesting funds for the following instruments: a tuba, a bass clarinet, a euphonium, a tenor saxophone, and two flutes.
These new instruments will help provide the influx of future music students with quality instruments. We currently have 64 music students in our program, but are projected to have over 100 in the next two to three years. The acquisition of these instruments is a critical step in continuing to provide a high level of music education for our students in the future.
The Truckee HS Music program has a rich history of successful student outcomes. We perform music at the highest level, consistently achieve superior ratings at festival competitions, and our students often go on to play music at the collegiate level and beyond. We perform for the community on a regular basis, and spread goodwill with our love of music. These instruments will ensure that we are to continue in these pursuits, despite the enormous projected future growth of the program.
As soon as the grant funds are released I will order the instruments, add them to our inventory, and then check them out to students beginning next school year. They will be used to perform at our many concerts, festivals, and community performances.
Not necessarily, but they are welcome to attend our concerts and share in our music with us.
Other funding sources for replenishing our music instrument inventory include Measure AA, TEMPO, and community donations. Each year instruments are donated to us (sometimes non-functional). Measure AA funds can be used for purchasing instruments, but oftentimes goes towards other operational costs such as sheet music, instrument repair, and other necessary supplies. TEMPO, our parent based volunteer booster group, helps out with repairs and instruments as well, but most of their efforts goes towards other costs including uniforms, transportation/travel associated costs, scholarships, etc. TEMPO's annual operating budget/fundraising goal is approximately $75,000 (for the high school and middle school). So, as you can see it takes quite a bit of effort and funds to make our programs flourish as they have in the past.
The official quote for the instruments is included as an attachment. The total grant request should be $13,661.28, which includes tax. All prices have anywhere from a 39%-63% discount applied due to our educator discount.
