This grant would provide an updated classroom library for all 4th graders at KBE. The goal is to update our current classroom library and increase access to a wide-range of quality books of different reading levels, genres, and topics, all within a cozy reading nook that students are drawn to. Students would have a larger collection of high-quality books to choose for independent reading, a variety of literature circle novel sets, in addition to shorter read-aloud books that align with 4th grade concepts and would be used to support and extend instruction.
Literacy research shows that increased access to diverse books in the classroom environment increases the amount of time students spend reading. An updated classroom library can support a range of literacy skills, motivate students to interact with books, and promote better reading performance. Classroom libraries can encourage students to read and have connections with books.
The success of our classroom library will be tracked using a new check-out and book review system. Results would provide valuable information regarding individual use of the library, which books are most popular, how frequently students check out and return books, level of enjoyment, and inventory.
This grant will be implemented by updating and expanding our classroom library with a range of new and interesting books, more open-face shelving, and comfortable furnishings to encourage student reading. Library books will be labeled with a classroom stamp and reading level sticker, sorted, organized, and catalogued by using the website, Library Thing.
Yes. With our core teaching model in 4th grade at KBE, 100% of 4th grade students will benefit from access to an updated classroom library.
