By connecting an art project with our social studies standards, we hope to build interest in the curriculum and appreciation for a type of art: painting on silk.
Each student will be able to take home one painted silk scarf, after learning techniques to apply fabric die to the material and fix it so that the material can be washed.
After studying about the Silk Road and movement of ideas and cultures along this historic road, students will have an opportunity to try painting on silk and explore artistic expression on a new medium.
The other two 6th grade teachers in my PLC are also planning to participate in this activity. We will be able to share teaching strategies and better define our objectives.
Social Studies standard 6.6 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the early civilizations of China.
Art standard 2.3 Using creative expression, students will create a drawing using varying tints, shades, and intensities.
