Description
Literature circles are a way to give students choice in the classroom. By allowing them to choose books that they want to read it allows students to foster a love for reading. Literature circles are also a time for teachers to differentiate by offering a variety of books on different reading levels and matching students not only with books they are interested in but with books at their personal reading level. The purpose of this grant is to add to the collection of 6th grade novels as we add a new 6th grade classroom at NTS. The objective is to meet the standards of reading, writing, listening and speaking through structured discussions, close reading and sharing of ideas. Literature Circles are an effective way to support critical thinking skills, synthesizing information and reflection.
Success of Program
Students will do daily stop and jots which will help assess specific skills. They will also answer questions and generate their own questions to pose to their group. They will be responsible for meaningful conversations with peers following discussion rubrics. All of these things will help measure comprehension. Students will also complete assessment forms weekly that align with Common Core standards to track their progress in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Implementation
Students will be given a brief introduction to the new books and then will be given a chance to choose which book they would like to read in a literature circle. Along with student preference, teachers will also consider reading level in order to best meet the needs of individual students. Some students will have the opportunity to listen to books online while reading along, allowing them to access these high interest texts. The books chosen for the grant cover a wide range of reading levels and styles, allowing for differentiation. Books range in style from traditional novels to graphic novels and even stories written in verse. While reading these books, students will use a structured process of reading, discussion and reflection. They will do this repeatedly through the year and the more novels they have to choose from the better!

This grant could tie into our PLC because literature circles align with the common core standards. Literature circles present a time for inquiry and close reading of grade level texts. Durin our PLCs, we can collaborate and design units and assessments around our literature circles. Teachers will collaborate as we share strategies used with different novels across classes.
