Kiwi Co. Crates are hands-on kits that arrive monthly with a focus on science, art, and engineering for children ages 5-8. These crates come with all the necessary materials needed to give students a project based experience that fosters creativity and collaboration in order to build a science and art project. Crates will be shared by groups of 4 students working together.
With the implementation of Next Generation Science Standards, the all-inclusive Kiwi Crates will help with the engineering portion of these standards. Students will work together to design and implement the project working together, making mistakes, and problem solving to complete a fun project all while teaching them principles of science.
Students will successfully complete the tasks presented to them each month. The Kiwi Crates foster creative problem solving techniques, including reading simple directions, designing and planning for a project, and completing the project with their team/crew. Basic scientific concepts will be taught along the way while exploring the crates.
Kiwi Co. Crates will be delivered monthly to the classroom where students will work in groups of 4 at work stations to complete the tasks. These crates will be used to strengthen science, art, and engineering practices for each group. Six crates will be ordered for the classroom with a six month subscription.
This subscription will be for a single classroom to pilot the program.
This is a pilot program for 2019-2020 school year. If the program is successful, additional funding sources will be considered.
We have used individual crates in class and the students are highly motivated to complete the tasks and learn content specific science skills through creative experiences.
Attached photos show 2nd and 3rd grade students completing the Moving with Muscles Kiwi Crate in order to build a soccer player and model how muscles are used in the human body. It also promotes collaboration while students work together to complete a task and follow written directions.
