3rd grade students at Tahoe Lake have traditionally tie dyed shirts at the end of the year.  This has become somewhat of a right of passage. The students then wear these vibrant shirts for all of our end of the year activities.  We would like to continue this tradition and are requesting funding to purchase the dye and other chemicals necessary to do this project with our students. We would also like to purchase some t-shirts for those students unable to bring a shirt from home.

Benefits of Program

All students in third grade will benefit from this program. We will have 60-70 students for the 2019-2020 school year. Objectives are:

  • to have fun!

  • explore the chemistry of dying

  • experiment with color blending

  • create a wearable piece of art

Success of Program

In the past the success of the program has been evident through the excitement of turning a white shirt into a colorful piece of clothing. No two shirts are ever alike! Students learn about the dying process but mostly have fun creating a wearable piece of art.

Implementation

This program will be implemented some time in June.  We will dye one morning at school. The students will take the coiled shirt home to sit for a night. The shirt will be rinsed and laundered at home. The students will wear their art to school the following day and for the remainder to the 3rd grade field trips and probably for years to come. Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes. The grant request includes enough material for each 3rd grade student to dye a shirt.

Sustainability
This is a consumable item so it is not sustainable on site. But, it will be sustainable for each individual student for a number of years.
