Research indicates that there is a strong relationship between reading comprehension and reading proficiency with fluency. Fluency is described as “the ability of readers to read quickly, effortlessly, and efficiently with good, meaningful expression” (Rasinski, 2003). Readers’ Theater is an instructional technique that can utilized to address fluency, comprehension, and student motivation. The interactive nature of the Readers’ Theater allows students to interact with content material as well as language, addressing different learning styles as well as providing students with opportunities to listen, speak, read, and write through reflection.
The Readers Theater books address the following standard:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.5.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Students utilize the Reader’s Theater scripts to engage in Spanish reading texts at different levels and increase reading fluency and comprehension. Students receive multiple exposures to Spanish vocabulary and content themes while engaging in an engaging and kinesthetic activity. Research has proven that Reader’s Theater bridges comprehension and fluency for students as well as improves awareness of punctuation and text features. These skills gained in Spanish can be applied and transferred by students to build literacy in English. The Reader’s Theater scripts chosen align with NGSS Science Standards, Social Studies, CCSS Math and ELA standards for 5th grade.
Throughout the school year, the Reader Theater scripts will be utilized to build background and extend learning for content through fun and engaging activities. This will help students build confidence presenting in front of their peers and re-reading passages. These scripts can be re-used yearly, as whole group or small group reading interventions.
This book can be shared between grades 5-8 within the Spanish Immersion program and content areas.
This is a one time purchase for this text set.
