Description

The 2nd and 3rd-grade classrooms at Sierra Expeditionary Learning School are committed to helping students succeed in school by providing calming and multi-sensory activities and materials to help regulate student behaviors in the classroom. As part of our Social-Emotional Learning concept at SELS, these sensory kits and calming corner materials will help encourage focus in students who struggle with transition times and redirecting negative energy.

Benefits of Program

Calming corners and sensory bins help transform classroom spaces into a designated area where students can relax, reflect, and regain their inner balance. By offering a range of tools to support emotional development, students will build their resilience in their academics. Providing students with alternative methods to calm themselves will promote language development with speaking and listening skills along with improvement in fine motor programming and interpersonal communication.

Success of Program

By teaching children the necessary skills to calm themselves when agitated or upset, students will be able to work independently, collaboratively, and improve social relationships with peers and staff. A self-regulated student is better equipped to learn in an educational setting and focus during academic instruction.

Implementation

With the purchase of a Sensory Kit and Calming Corner materials, students will be able to stay in the classroom to minimize classroom disruptions by allowing them the time and space to reset. These kits will help get students back to the learning space more quickly to support their ELA, math, and social-emotional learning.

Can you share this grant with your grade level or subject team?

Yes, I am planning on sharing these materials with my grade-level and other classrooms as needed.

Sustainability
These kits are self-contained bins that have materials designed to last multiple years. They are not consumable but may need replacement when materials wear out.
