Scholastic My Big World are weekly newspapers specifically designed for Pre -K. The issues cover social studies, science and current events that enhance our ELD program and thematic learning units. The topics covered in the weekly issues correlate to what is being taught in transitional kindergarten across all three classrooms at our site.
This is a great resource to get students excited about learning the science, social studies and current event topics we are teaching. The newspapers are age appropriate and engaging. They support our ELA and ELD Speaking and Listening standards. They allow for great class discussions and peer-to-peer conversations. There is also an online component that is really engaging, with supplemental videos, games, and movement breaks.
These materials enhance our collaborative conversations and vocabulary development. They add a lot of great facts/information to our curriculum, while being very exciting and engaging. The students really look forward to reading them in the classroom together and taking them home to share with families. The monthly topics coincide with our TK monthly themes, from investigating pumpkins in the fall, arctic animals in the winter and farm animals in the spring!
These resources are used weekly during our ELD/ reading comprehension time. We read them as a whole group, small group and independently. They are then taken home to be read with families. Families also have access to the online component.

No other funding sources are available for us at this time.
We wrote the grant for 75 students. We can adjust the actual number needed in September 2026.
