Description

We are asking for more large blocks, gross motor equipment, and cooperative play activities to use on the playground. In TK, we spend a great deal of time engaged in play-based learning outside, much more than all other grades. We would like more equipment on the playground that will support the students in their development of executive functioning skills, which is a major goal in TK.

Benefits of Program

This equipment will provide opportunities for gross motor skills development, engineering, dramatic play, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving. It will also support the development of turn-taking and cooperation skills. The blocks will help build fine motor skills to improve pencil grip and writing abilities. Adding all this new equipment to our playground will also foster relationship building because the students will need to work together to build with the large blocks and balance on the seesaw.

Success of Program
  • Outcome: Students will demonstrate increased physical confidence and core strength by using the large outdoor equipment. The students will show more independence and rule-following abilities. Another outcome would be better writing in the classroom due to the increase in fine motor development.
  • Measurement: Observed improvement in balance, coordination, body, and hand strength. They will improve their ability to navigate complex physical obstacles over the course of the school year. They will also improve social skills, like turn-taking, problem-solving, and cooperation.
Implementation

The equipment will be used on the playground during our three daily recesses. The various large building blocks will provide opportunities for the students to collaborate with peers to create structures. This will foster cooperation, turn-taking, and problem-solving skills. The students will also be experimenting with basic engineering skills. Building with these blocks will also support both fine and gross motor development. This equipment will provide positive outlets for students to exert energy.

Notes

Please consider approving this grant, even though it includes "playground equipment." TK learning is primarily play-based, and we spend a lot of time outside, learning in nature. This would greatly benefit all of our TK students, both socially and academically. Thank you for taking the time to consider our grant:)
