I am writing to respectfully request funding to purchase two classroom sets of the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins for the 6th-grade classrooms. The goal is to foster a lifelong love of reading in our students by introducing them to a highly engaging, thought-provoking, and widely celebrated piece of young adult literature.

Description
Benefits of Program
This novel is particularly effective for several reasons:
- High Engagement and Accessibility: The fast-paced plot and relatable protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, immediately draw students in. The accessible language and compelling narrative structure make it appropriate for a wide range of reading levels within a 6th-grade classroom.
- Promotes Critical Thinking: The story explores important themes such as courage, resilience, ethics, social inequality, and the consequences of power. These themes naturally lend themselves to meaningful classroom discussions, helping students develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Encourages Empathy and Perspective-Taking: Students are invited to consider complex moral dilemmas and to see the world through perspectives different from their own. This supports social-emotional learning and helps build empathy.
- Cultural Relevance and Motivation: As a widely recognized and popular novel, The Hunger Games connects reading to broader cultural conversations. Students are often excited to read a book they have heard about, which increases motivation and participation.
- Supports Literacy Development: Through guided reading, discussion, and writing activities, students will strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and communication skills. The novel also provides opportunities for cross-curricular connections, including social studies and ethics.
Success of Program
By providing two full class sets, we will be able to ensure equitable access for all students, allowing us to read, annotate, and discuss the novel together as a learning community for many years to come.
Ultimately, this grant will not only place books in students’ hands but will also help ignite curiosity, imagination, and a genuine love of reading that can extend far beyond the classroom.
Implementation
I was able to obtain an extensive unit for this book from a teacher who previously taught this with great success at the 6th-grade level.
