High-quality physical education instruction for students contributes to good health, develops fundamental and advanced motor skills, improves students’ self-confidence, and provides opportunities for increased levels of physical fitness that are associated with high academic achievement. All 4th and 5th grade students have participated in PE cross-country skiing at both KBE and TL. This grant will enable 4th and 5th grade students to build upon skills developed during their primary school years and extend learning through application and paricipation beyond the the classroom and gymnasium. In addition, currently 4th and 5th grade students receive 140 minutes of Physical Education, to the CA required minutes of 200 minutes (every 10 days of school). With the XC Ski Grant students and will have the opportunity to access winter exercise, which can be easily accessed and used in a cross-curricular manner integrating: science, environment and/or watershed, team-building, and being exposed to community recreational areas (North Tahoe XC center).
Measure of success will be: 1.) Use of equipment through out the winter months; 2.) Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities (Standard 1), such as, striding, gliding, balance, and poling; 2.) Students demonstrat knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies, that apply to the learning and performance of XC skiing and other cardiovascular activities (Standard 2), and; 3.) Through the shared activity of nordic skiing students have the opportunity to share and enjoy recreation together devolping social skills, self-confidence, and acceptance for a variety of skill levels (Standard 4 and 5).
Working with Salomon ski representative I have received price quotes (with a 15% discount) on skis, bindings, boots, and poles. Kevin Murname (Co-manager) of the Tahoe Nordic Center has agreed to have the school order come through the XC center. About five years ago I wrote a similar grant for KBE and worked with both Tahoe XC and Salomon. Local ski shops have graciously offered to mount bindings on the skis at no cost. I have also discussed with Doug McNair about designing and building a functional rolling cart to house the XC equipment (Truckee Elementary has one) enabling teachers easy access to the equiment. All 4th and 5th grade students will be sized during their PE time and teachers will receive a list of the students' ski, boot, and pole sizes.
Currently, for PLC’s I am working on a pilot program at Kings Beach Elementary to increase student movement, which studies have found to have positive cognitive effects and improve academic growth and concept retention. The collaborative team includes: (Maria Martin (Nutritionist), Wendy Buchanan (Kinesiologist), and Jill Whistler (Physiologist), and me. We are exploring ways to increase total student activity time through out a child’s day. The Pilot Fitness team is providing short lessons for integrating movement in cross-curricular lessons 2 times per day for the classroom teacher. Data will be examined to see if student fitness levels improve, academic aptitude and readiness to learn improve, see if perceived value of physical activity changes, and examine correlations between fitness levels and academic achievement. If the pilot program at KBE is successful, there is a strong possibility it will be extended district wide (meetings with Steve Jennings which happened in Sept.). I am currently working with Jamey Hinkle, Middle School Physical Education teacher, to examine data collected on 4th-8th, and disaggregate student populations that are active and fit (or below fitness levels) with academic achievement and social skills.
